Heated Motorcycle Grips, If You Want To Keep Your Fingers A Bit Longer

If you are, like me, an all season motorcycle rider, then you probably are confronted with some pretty cold weather some times in the year. Then having heated grips is by no means a luxury, if you don't want our fingers freezing that is. Installing heated grips is not that difficult and can be done with some pretty simple steps.
The installation
If you don't feel comfortable installing anything on your motorcycle on your own you should pay someone else to do it for you. Or ask a friend to do it for you while you watch and help, that way you learn that it can be fun to work on your bike. When you are comfortable doing it yourself then you will first need to choose which heated motorcycle grips you would like to install. Hop on to the internet and do a search for grip manufacturers and see what kind of heated grips have your preference. Then you need to check if that specific type can me mounted on your motorcycle. Next step is order them and then you start the installation.
Always start with cleaning, if needed, your working area before you start a project. Not that installing these grips is very complicated but you don't want to be looking for your tools and parts all the time while those things disappear under the ruble of an old project. A thing you should be aware of is that the diameter of the handles will increase in width once you have installed the heated grips.

You don't want to pull over every time you need to switch the heater for the grips on or off when you are on a long trip. When you see the look on your friends face when you pull over for the 4th time just to pull the switch of your heated grips you wish you had made sure that switch was on your handlebars.
When you are sure that the grips, wires and switch are where you want them to be then you should follow the instructions that came with the the grips and start hooking them up to your battery. When all is done and works as it should then you can start to enjoy those all weather rides.

Winter is here folks, but that doesn't mean we can't keep riding. How can we stave off
the bone chilling wind and cold? Heated gear, of course!
Heated gear keeps various parts of your body warm while riding in winter temperatures, so just say no to Hypothermia! I'm a year round rider, and though I've since moved to Austin, Texas where winter riding is pretty tolerable, I used to live in Baltimore, Maryland where winter riding involved below freezing temps for extended periods of time and a good bit of that white stuff. Heated gear is a wonderful thing - trust me on this. I used to own a heated vest and gloves.

How Does Heated Motorcycle Gear Work?
Most Heated gear uses anywhere from 15 to 100 watts depending on the brand and the amount of gear you use while riding.
You have two types of power output really. You can power it from your motorcycle battery, or you can run it on self contained, rechargeable batteries placed or sewn directly into the article of clothing. That's not to say they are interchangeable so see what kind of power supply it requires before you buy it!
I owned the plug in type that ran on my motorcycle's 12 volt battery. It provided unlimited riding hours. The drawback is that this means it ONLY works when riding. Walk away from the bike and you walk away from the heat.
The self contained style has a lithium battery (usually 7.4 volt) supply and lasts an average of 4 to 10 hours depending on the heat setting. When the battery is dead you have to plug in to the battery charger and 4 hours later; presto! The self contained provides a little more flexibility and warmth when you are away from the motorcycle.
All of the clothes work with a temp. controller that you can manually set to the desired temp. If you use several pieces of heated gear, they usually connect together so that one control works them all, thus preventing you from looking like a science fiction robot reject.

Tips for Wear
Heated gear is worn as close to your body as you can without actually touching your skin. For this reason, I preferred the vest liner and glove liner to the actual jacket and glove option. Also, I always wore leathers as my outer layer for both wind and crash protection.
Always remember that wind chill is as much your enemy as actual temperature. The thermometer doesn't tell the whole story, so dress warm. Also, avoid riding for extended lengths of time in the cold as you run the risk of lowering your core temp too much or getting dehydrated - a thing you might not expect to happen in the cold.

As in any building trade, the right tools are required to perform a task safely and efficiently. I will discuss the tools required to build your dream chopper, at home. The tools mentioned should be searched online or your local retail store for the best deal and quality, to insure building your chopper will be a great experience. Also the tools mentioned will enhance the value of your chopper and get some get feedback from your buddies.
Chopper Building Tools
1. Chain breaker- remove the chain form your bike, a great tool. The main chain link should be very strong and can be very difficult to remove without the chain breaker tool. It is not too expensive and can save a lot of time when you are working on your chopper.
2. Chain press tool- makes reinstalling the chain much easier. This method is easier than the old hammer method which can be quite painful.
3. Compression tester- Check the compression of your engine. It is useful as it can tell you when you should rebuild your engine. Checks for bad rings, scarred cylinders and much more.
4, Hydraulic brake bleeder- bleed the air from your brake system. When repairing your brakes, air can enter into your brake lines. It removes the trapped air and does not require the assistance of another individual, to bleed your brakes.
5. Handle bar and sub frame straightener- straightens your frame or handle bars, easily. In some cases, straighten your chopper frame or handle bars, will require more than a cheater bar. The straightener can to do it efficiently and safely to insure best results.
6. Clutch holding tool and spring compression tool- they will aid in removal and installation of your clutch.
7. Fork tools- fork oil gage and seal drivers. The oil gage will check your level of fork oil and seal drivers will aid in installing your new fork seals, much easier.
8. Flywheel puller- remove your flywheel much easier and not cause any damage to your parts.
9. Motorcycle lift- will aid in lifting your motorcycle and be in a raised position to be able to safely perform repairs.
